Risks of General Anaesthesia
Before undergoing a medical procedure that requires general anaesthesia, it is important to be aware of the potential risks and complications associated with this type of anaesthetic. While general anaesthesia is very safe, there are some risks and complications that can occur and these may vary depending on a number of factors, including the type of procedure, the patient’s age, medical history, current health status, and the length of the surgery.
Before you surgery, it is important to discuss with Dr Goonan if you have any concerns or questions about the potential risks and complications, so that you are fully informed and prepared.
Common and Very Common Complications (Rate of occurrence: 1 in 100 to 1 in 10)
- Post-operative nausea and vomiting
- Sore Throat
- Confusion and/or Memory Loss
- Shivering
- Post-Operative Chest Infection
- Headache
- Itchy skin
- Muscle aches and pains
- Bruising
- Low blood pressure and dizziness
Uncommon Side Complications (Rate of occurrence: 1 in 1000 patients)
- Damage to teeth
- Awareness
- Breathing difficulties
